Use The Desktop Cleanup Wizard
Even new users with clean desktops will eventually see them become cluttered as
they install programs and let these program shortcuts consume to much space. The
wizard walks you through the process of removing rarely used icons from the
Desktop and places them in a new folder called Unused Desktop Shortcuts
on the Desktop.
TIP: Right-click on a blank area of the Desktop, select Arrange Icons By, and choose Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard.
The Wizard presents you with a list of Desktop icons you haven’t used in the past 60 days. If you wish to leave an icon on the Desktop, deselect its checkbox to remove the check mark. Click Next to verify your selections and then click Finish to close the wizard. To return an icon to the Desktop, double-click the Unused Desktop Shortcuts folder and drag and drop the Icon from the folder to the Desktop.
NOTE: The Desktop Cleanup Wizard runs by default every 60 days. To change this setting, right-click the Desktop, click Properties and choose the Desktop tab. Click the Customize Desktop button, deselect the Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard Every 60 Days checkbox and click OK to close the dialog boxes.
THIS FEATURE IS NOT AVAILABLE IN VISTA OR WINDOWS 7.
