Quick Tip

023-2007

Give your Thumb Drive (Flash Drive) a name.

The ease of using right click, Send To“Removable Disk” for a file is one of a thumb drive’s many benefits.  However, remembering what drive letter has been assigned to which drive is confusing especially if you are using multiple storage devices or computers.

TIP:  Change the name of your Thumb Drive (Flash Drive) so that it can be easily recognizable.  To do this, insert the Thumb Drive into any USB port. Cancel any window that opens. Double click on My Computer, find the drive letter assigned to your Thumb Drive and right click on it.  In the drop down menu that appears click on Properties.  The Properties window will open and the General tab will display.  If you look in the first box, called the volume label, it will have a name or a series of numbers, be highlighted and the curser will be flashing.  Type in the name you want to call your Thumb Drive, click Apply then Okay.

Now when you open your Thumb Drive or use the Send To menu you can easily identify it by it’s new given name.

HINT:  You can change the name as many times as you wish by using the above procedure.  I also find that this procedure works well with external hard drives.
