COMPUTER MAINTENANCE - RUN EVERY 30 DAYS
Shut off your Screen Saver: Right click a blank area of the desktop, select Properties. In the window that appears click on the Screen Saver tab. Use the down arrow and select NONE. Click OK.
Shut off your Virus protection: In the Notification Area of the taskbar, right click on the virus icon. Select to exit or shut off protection.
Go to My Computer / Right Click Local Disk C / Click Properties and open the Tools tab. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. Under Check disk options, check the “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors” and “Automatically fix file…” boxes. Click ‘Start’. (You will then have to restart your computer. This will take a few minutes.)
After the computer restarts again shut off the virus protection.
NEXT RUN DISK CLEANUP:
Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Disk Cleanup. Disk cleanup will now scan the C drive and give you the results in a window. In the Disk Cleanup tab, put a check mark next to the files you want to delete. If in doubt let the default settings make the choices for you. Click OK and your done.
NEXT RUN DISK DEFRAGMENTER:
Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Disk Defragmenter. The Disk Defragmenter window will open. Click on the C drive to highlight it. You can then select Analyze or Defragment. If you get a message that it is not necessary to defragment at this time, DO IT ANYWAY. This will take a little time.
You are almost done. Restart your computer. Make sure your anti virus is running and then reset your screen saver if you use it and pat yourself on the back for a job well done. Be sure and come back in 30 days.
