CLAREMONT SENIORS COMPUTER CLUB
BULLETIN
January 29, 2012
Greetings Computer Club Members:
We are continuing to have a strong attendance at our weekly meetings, even though we are in the middle of winter and it gets dark before our meetings begin. Thank You for attending our meetings and an extra big Thank You for attending at the Joslyn Center when we had to give up our usual meeting place, as happens often. We realize it is an inconvenience and parking is a premium. The executive Board and volunteers really appreciate your loyalty.
Thank You
To
All of our Volunteers
For helping us prepare for and provide everyone with an
interesting meeting every week.
Lost & Found
We have had a beautiful oval platter that has been hanging out in our cupboard at Hughes for quite awhile. There is a label on the back that says Marrakech, but that is the pattern, it is purple, green & yellow.
If this belongs to you please speak up so we can return it to the rightful owner.
This platter has not yet been claimed, I will display it at the meeting Tuesday night, and if it is not claimed it will go back into our cupboard at the Padua room.

Steve Holst and his team of Technical advisors will be looking forward to greeting you each Friday from 1 to 4 pm. Our Lab is located in the first door on the right as you enter from Mountain Ave. The classes are held in the Bob Binder Room of the annex through the double doors on the left. The Music and Slide Transfer areas are located in the front of our classroom. This is all located in the Annex of the Joslyn Senior Center 660 N. Mountain Ave. Claremont. Joy Huguley is available to help in the transfer of Music from LP’s to CD’s, please provide your own CD for transfer.
The techs welcome all of the challenges you bring along with whatever goodies you wish to share. Please follow the guidelines which can be found on the club website, plan to stay with your Computer as they may need your input. You may want to check out some of the refurbished items they offer for a small donation. The techs are all volunteers from our club; and they endeavor to help with relatively minor problems. We are not in competition with commercial repair facilities. We will not hesitate to refer you to the professionals for major problems.
They cannot service your computer if it is still under warranty as that may void your warranty. They can help you install software that you own, or freeware or software, but it is illegal to install club software in private computers. You are expected to stay with your computer and perform as much of the service as possible with the help of the tech. When you bring your computer into the workshop, you should also bring your “operating system installation disc. (If there should be a need for reinstallation.) As mentioned above, we cannot use Club software discs to achieve this need.
Everyone is welcome to the workshop, but Claremont Seniors Computer Club members always have priority. Please be sure to sign in with our friendly greeter who serves to direct you for service. They will also show you around our facility and encourage you to join our club if you are not already a member. Remember, membership is free, and you are invited to attend our weekly meetings. We also offer classes to improve your computer skills which are designed for different levels of expertise. If you need help with an MP3 player this is the place to bring it for assistance.
Tutors are available to help with any program you may need to work on, just check in and let the greeter know your needs.

Spotify
Spotify is a Swedish DRM-based music streaming service offering streaming of selected music from a range of major and independent record labels, including Sony, EMI, Warner Music Group, and Universal.[2][3] Launched in October 2008 by Swedish startup Spotify AB, the service had approximately ten million users as of 15 September 2010;[4] about 2.5 million of whom were paying members.[5][6] The service is, as of November 2011, available in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Music can be browsed by artist, album, record label, genre or playlist as well as by direct searches.
On desktop clients, a link allows the listener to purchase selected material via partner retailers. Users can register either for free accounts supported by visual and radio-style advertising or for paid subscriptions without ads and with a range of extra features such as higher bitrate streams and offline access to music. A paid "Premium" subscription is required to use Spotify on mobile devices. Subscriptions are restricted to people with credit/debit cards or PayPal accounts.
You can download Spotify for free but you do get commercials, you are invited by the commercials to try a premium version for free for 30 days. You do receive the song in its entirety, the site is easy to navigate, and worth trying if you like music. You can download it at http://tinyurl.com/8524k23

Sustainable Claremont
Claremont's General Plan calls for the City to address issues of environmental, social, and economic sustainability. In response to this a task force was organized to begin the process of determining what should be done. This group, the Mayor's Task Force on Sustainable Development, produced a Green Paper with suggestions for forming a more comprehensive plan. One of these suggestions was the formation of a larger, citizen group to work on a more far-reaching sustainability plan for the City to pursue. The Sustainability Task Force set to work and in a relatively short time a plan was devised and presented to the City. One of the recommendations in the plan was for the formation of a citizen group which would work independent of the City government but generally in cooperation with it. The City Sustainability Plan was adopted on October 28, 2008. In December, work began on the formation of Sustainable Claremont.
